Now that summer is actually, and finally, here, we can look forward to fun! Fishing, hiking, sailing, swimming, sports, and travel – all those wonderful memory-making activities that we so look forward to.
We all know the personal safety measures we need to take to keep ourselves healthy during hot and sunny weather, such as hats, sunblock, and UV sunglasses, but sometimes we may end up with an issue such as dry eyes anyway. Today we would like to share a few of the causes of this common and uncomfortable eye problem so that you can take preventive measures. We want your summer to be truly stellar!
Some causes of Dry Eye can be:
Good Old Sunshine. This one may surprise you, even though it also seems obvious. Appropriate eyewear and hats will help you avoid squinting and excessive exposure, which add additional stress to you eyes. Sunglasses with UV protection will help if you are experiencing heightened light sensitivity due to Dry Eye. The contact wearer may want to switch to glasses more often during sunny weather to prevent your eyes from becoming drier than normal, which will cause irritation.
A Clean Face. We all know that summertime means sweating. While sweat is mostly water, it also carries bacteria, makeup, and sunscreen, or anything else that happens to be on your face. Cleansing every so often with water-based wipes will help here, as well as routinely washing your face at the end of every day to keep your eyes free of debris.
Sunscreen. This product is vital in the prevention of severe sunburns and UV skin damage. It’s also extremely uncomfortable if it gets in your eyes! The leading cause of Dry Eye, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD, is itself caused by eye gland blockages, and sunscreen can be a culprit here. Wash your hands after applying sunscreen to yourself or others, and look away when spray sunscreen is applied, although we recommend using sunscreen sticks for facial protection, as they are much safer than sprays.
Chemicals in Water. If you plan to be in the pool this summer, keep in mind that chlorine is an irritant that will make Dry Eye symptoms even worse. If the beach is more your style, make sure you keep your eyes protected from sand, and never open your eyes while under the surface of any body of water without proper eyewear.
Where There’s Smoke….Campfires, cookouts, bonfires – and here comes the smoke. It’s not only harmful to lungs, but to your eyes, as well. The heat of the fire and the particles of burnt material work together to further irritate a person suffering from chronic Dry Eye.
