Foggy lenses. Headaches. Glasses constantly sliding down your nose. Vision problems can be a serious inconvenience for your sanity and your wallet. If you’re tired of constantly re-adjusting your glasses, Dr. Mital Patel may have the perfect solution for you: Ortho K.
What is Ortho K?
Orthokeratology is a nonsurgical treatment offered here at Classic Care Vision. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of LASIK surgery or aren’t a candidate for it, Ortho K may be the solution you’ve been looking for. This treatment can even help children ages 8-12 to correct nearsightedness, a problem that is becoming more and more common as children spend less time outdoors and more time in front of screens.
This increase in screen time is one of the factors driving up vision issues among most demographics. More than 60% of the world’s population requires some form of visual aid, such as glasses or contact lenses. Regardless of age, the most common vision issues are:
Vision problems like these may be due to eyes that are too short, too long, or have misshapen surfaces. And if you’re part of the 60%, you likely have a difficult time playing certain sports or even taking on professions that require perfect vision without corrective lenses. Because Ortho K is noninvasive, reversible, and offers fast results, it may be an excellent option for you!
How does Ortho K work?
During your first Ortho K consultation, Dr. Patel performs a few tests to determine the status of your vision issues and overall health of your eyes. Using a device called a topographer, she creates a map of your cornea.
Using this information, Dr. Patel then creates a customized treatment plan, including specially designed contact lenses. Rather than wearing corrective lenses all day, you wear your specialized Ortho K lenses at night. They are made from an advanced, oxygen-permeable material with specialized curves that actually reshape your cornea while you sleep.
Once your new lenses have been created, Dr. Patel shows you how to insert and remove them, and how to properly care for them. She also creates one more map of your cornea with the lens in place to ensure that it fits properly.
Ortho K treatment
Your treatment plan typically lasts just 1-2 weeks. During this time, you wear the Ortho K lenses at night and soft contact lenses during the day while your vision is improving.
At the end of your treatment plan, Dr. Patel performs another exam to ensure your eyes are still healthy and to determine the success of your treatment. By this time, you may be ready to stop wearing your corrective lenses altogether, but Dr. Patel will recommend a maintenance schedule to keep your eyesight from reverting to its former level. This may require you to wear your speciality Ortho K lenses every other night, or every few nights.
If you’re ready to ditch your glasses for good, call our Kennesaw, Georgia office to schedule an Ortho K consultation or book an appointment online. In just a couple of weeks, you could be seeing the world around you clearly without corrective lenses!
