Ortho-K

Providing a broad range of vision care services is part of our commitment to our patients. For individuals who find wearing corrective lenses limiting and uncomfortable, we offer Ortho-K therapy, a method of correcting your vision while you sleep, so you can see more clearly during waking hours. Your Kennesaw optometrist can offer this new therapy as part of your total vision care to improve your performance at work, at school, and at play.

Understanding Ortho-K Therapy

Orthokeratology, usually shortened to “Ortho-K,” is a system of using special gas permeable contact lenses to reshape the corneas during the nighttime hours. Refractive vision problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism occur because the shape of the cornea varies from the optimum rounded shape. The reshaping effect will last for several days, and the individuals should wear the contact lenses every night for best effect. Patients who are not good candidates for LASIK corrective surgery can benefit from Ortho-K for better vision without glasses.

What You Can Expect From Ortho-K Therapy at Classic Vision Care

Only specially trained optometrists can fit patients with Ortho-K lenses. The therapy is non-surgical and involves wearing special contact lenses that are completely safe to wear while you sleep. The eye doctor will start by measuring the cornea’s curvature with a device that produces a map of the surface of your eyes. Then, the doctor will then provide the lenses you wear during sleep to reshape the cornea the appropriate amount. Wearing the lenses during sleep is safe and generally, causes no problem to patients.

You may also need a number of lenses to wear during the day to temporarily correct your vision during the therapy process. The goal of the therapy is to achieve 20/20 vision, but this may be possible due to individual factors. However, the therapy can generally provide 20/40 vision, which is the legal limit for driving without corrective lenses.

Other Correction Methods after Ortho-K

Ortho-K is completely reversible. It does not impede your ability to switch to another method of vision correction, such as LASIK eye surgery if you choose to do so at a later time. Ortho-K can be a good option for children who participate in athletics, who are too young for LASIK eye surgery. They can enjoy better vision without glasses or contacts now and have permanent vision correction surgery when they are older.
